Standard 3.1
Classroom management and collaborative learning is huge part of keeping students engaged and getting more from your students intellectually. For this standard I have chose to use my internet lesson plan. Here I chose to use a Web 2.0 tool called Glogster to access the students’ knowledge (or mastery) of the causes of World War One. To get this project up and running I had students create a free Glogster account and then gave them access to my class blog. I walked students through the registration process as well through the basics of creating the interactive poster board. To reinforce this I created screen cast to help students further their knowledge of the registration process and the basics of Glogster. Students used the internet to gather information, pictures, and videos then added the resources to the Glogster to show the causes of World War One. When completed students will work with one another to judge whether criteria from the rubric had been met. Students also took surveys at the end to give me feedback about the project.
The project was meant to be a formative assessment of prior learning about World War One. Throughout the project I took the role of facilitator and walked around assisting students with the technology problems that they may have had. To keep students from sitting around waiting for help I created screencast for them to help themselves out without my assistance. I modeled how to effectively use the site for students the first time as we walked through it. I continued to show students little tricks to troubleshoot situations that may have delayed them. Students were able to collaborate with one another when they were finished, or thought they were finished. Students could aid one another and check their poster board with the rubric to make sure they covered all the material needed. During student presentations, the audience (students) would be a part of the grading process helping determine the quality of creativity and appearance. This project was student-driven but was teacher led. I was able to maintain classroom management because I was able to engage students with a project that was interesting and used technology. Students were constantly engaged throughout the project and reached a higher level discovery.
I learned a lot from the creation and implementation of this lesson plan. The first thing I learned was about the creation of this product. I found that while I was putting things together at home, my infrastructure at school might not support everything I wanted to be able to do in the classroom. The bandwidth of the school was not able to handle 30 plus students on the internet searching for pictures and videos to put on their interactive poster board. I found that students had to wait for pages to load or videos to play. This is where I could have had a backup plan or changed it all together. Secondly, my directions were not as clear as I thought so I really needed to be more specific about what I wanted from my students. The one thing I would change would have to deal with the infrastructure of the school. I would make the project a partner project rather than an individual project. Not only would this help to address the bandwidth issues, it would also provide more collaboration for the students. I think that this assignment will and did impact student learning greatly. Students were engaged throughout the whole project and continued to discover new things about the concept we were learning. This can impact school improvement as well through the sharing of this type of project. All subjects can benefit from using projects like this one. Students need to be led on the road to discovery rather than be bored in a traditional classroom. I assessed this assignment through a survey at the end which gauged effectiveness. It can also be assessed through student achievement and success on summative assessments.
