Standard 3.4
Assistive technology is used in situations where students with special needs might need help getting information written legibly and or understanding information better. The student I worked with was a 9th grade student with dysgraphic. This is where the student does not write well, and the things he does write he cannot even read himself. In this plan myself and a team of teachers put together a plan that could help him write and retrieve information. The plan was to purchase a desktop writer for the student so he could write his notes and assignments and this device would send the information wirelessly to a printer that would print the information out for the student. This device will help the student read information needed to learn as well as turn in legible assignments for proper grades. To teach all of this students other teachers how to use the device, we would put together a presentation to show them how the assistive technology works and how he can make it work properly in their classes. The plan details who will be responsible for the device, when it will be used, and what it will be used for.
Being able to facilitate this type of technology to the staff at Moody High School was not difficult because of our Wednesday morning professional development. Every Wednesday we have an hour and a half of professional development to help our staff become more effective teachers. Here is where we would be able to teach other teachers about the assistive technology. The team would also, after purchasing the device, teach the student and his family how to use the assistive device. The special education teacher would be on the team to help assist me and the other teachers in purchasing and learning how to use the device ourselves. Before we purchased the device the team was able to research a few devices that could help our student and other students in the future. The desktop writer was the best choice for us because it is like a laptop computer without all of the bells and whistles that laptops have.
I learned that there are ton of options for students with special needs. There are so many options that it can be overwhelming. Really it just depends on how much you want to spend on a assistive technology. I also learned that sometimes you have to just look at your child and see what is best for them. We chose a simple option rather than go off and purchase something out of the ordinary. If I had to do this all over again I would go with some of the software available that is not that expensive. Our system actually purchased laptops for our school and this could be a simpler option for our budget. We could purchase the software and then have it on his laptop that he gets. I think the software we would like to purchase would be a speech to text type software, so it takes the writing out of the situation all together. This assignment can really impact this one students learning, but can affect more than one student in the long run. This device can be used over and over if it is maintained properly. Student success can be measured in quality of work now. With teachers and this student having the ability to read the work, now the student can be assessed properly.
