Standard 3.6
The emerging technology plan is the artifact that I chose to
align with this standard. In this project, we were tasked with researching an
emerging technology and create a presentation detailing certain aspects to
present to our school. I chose to
research a technology that was new to me, but is something that a number of
schools are using. It is an online learning platform called Desire to Learn.
This learning platform is one that I had to become familiar with because of the
online courses I was taking at Kennesaw State required its use. This type of technology allows teachers and
schools to offer a blended learning environment for their students. In this platform, teachers can create lessons
that are engaging and collaborative for their classrooms (real and
virtual). With this type of technology,
we will be able to prepare our students for college and the work place. We will
be able to implement relevant and rigorous curriculum in the classroom with
this type of learning platform. Through
this presentation and research, we decided to target our high school students
first and then our lower grade levels.
In the presentation I was tasked with providing information regarding
the technologies use, limitations, and how the technology would relate to Moody’s
Curriculum. Each one of these questions was used to determine whether this
would be a good fit for our school and system.
This presentation was put together for Moody High Schools administration and school improvement team (which I am on). I spent most of my time researching this technology but also sat down with my school improvement team to see what we needed or could use to help improve our students and our teachers. Overwhelming an online learning platform was something that our team was interested in learning about. From there I thought about tools and applications I have used and have heard about from others. So, I selected something that was familiar to me, but still could learn more about. By selecting this and researching the technology, this made a statement to our staff that we want to improve the culture of learning at Moody High School. Throughout the presentation, I answered the questions needed for our school to the best of my ability. The only question I was not able to answer fully was the total cost of the learning platform. The company would not even give me a quote without accurate numbers and a possible order. I gave a full run down of how the platform can help student achievement and the potential problems that we may face because of the infrastructure at Moody. The platform was very compatible with what we did have, and were getting. We actually purchased laptops at a 2:1 initiative. This allows us as a school to offer equitable access to all of our students at school. I detailed how Desire to Learn can help our school by using terminology that they used on their website. After finishing the presentation, we determined that this was a suitable technology for our school to use.
I really enjoyed researching this technology because I could see the future impact that it could have at my school. I learned that there is more to getting something like this than just downloading it. There are many costs that go along with it. The main costs would come from the purchase of laptops, networks, software fees and then support. As a regular classroom teacher, these are not things that you would instantly think about. I also learned that putting something like this presentation together not all teachers are going to be in favor of this. My school improvement team was all in favor of this online platform or something similar to it. Change is often the biggest obstacle to overcome. If I could change anything about this presentation, I would research and add more testimonials about Desire to Learn being an effective medium. I would want to find a video or two to make this point for my presentation. Technology teams like to see working examples, and how they used them to be effective. I think that this technology and artifact will show future school improvement through ACT scores and staff development. With technology like this, our staff can be more effective facilitators and allow students to really think for themselves. Teacher observations by administrators will help increase effective teaching strategies with technology.
