Standard 1.3
Standard 1.3 narrative policies, procedures, programs, and funding
To fulfill this standard, I chose to use my emerging technology project as my artifact. This project was actually fun, because we were tasked with finding new technology we think would be beneficial to our school and system. Our system lacked useable technology until recently, in which the system purchased laptops at a 1:2 ratio for our students and teachers. A total of 350 laptops were purchased, so there was a need to figure out how to use them effectively. So this project was done on Desire to Learn (D2L), which is an online learning platform. I created this presentation to show my administration and hopefully my system what we can use these laptops for.
I spent time researching schools and systems who use Desire to Learn, and how they used it to engage students. Throughout the presentation, I walked my audience through what D2L is, who it is targeted towards, funding, limitations, teacher use, effective use by students, and the implementation of this platform for my system. I think that the most important part of the presentation was how it can be used to meet content standards and be used to differentiate lessons. In this section of the presentation I talked about how D2L can be used to flip the classroom. This format allows the teacher more time to help struggling students on assignments. This also would allow more advanced students to discover more about concepts that are taught. This learning platform is vast and has so much to offer to my school and system that I went all out to research its effectiveness in hopes of implementing this type of platform for my school. At the backend of the presentation I gave a detailed plan for implementing this platform my school and system. I planned to implement this platform over a three year period, with a beta school to start then other schools to follow after the beta showed signs of success. After researching this emerging technology I found out that there are many platforms that are out there for schools and systems to use. I found that there is a system at every cost, but with that cost comes different levels of effectiveness. But with that being said the key to using these platforms is to put the learning into the hands of the students which will lead to more effective learning in the classroom.
Policies that were needed at the time would consist of a proposal to the Board of Education for funding purchases. This step would have been after proposing this technology to my principal and our technology team. The board presentation would be the largest road block because of the amount of funding this program would take. The system is already short on funding and this would need to be a great presentation to make this happen. I also learned that this process could take longer than expected. Systems do not make quick decisions and then implement them. This process could take a whole school year to get approved. In these procedures I would have to show exact numbers and time frames which I feel I did a good job of. The one hump I would hit would be in the actual cost and I would have to go back to D2L to get a quote. St. Clair county schools has put forth a clear set of procedures for these types of proposals on technology. While all these polices were great I would also have to clear up the issue of the schools infrastructure, which would also create more funding issues for St. Clair County. While the technology itself was new and intriguing, and could actually help student learning, the length of time needed to get this implemented would be lengthy and time consuming.
I feel that if I had to do this project over again, I would have worked to get more out of Desire to Learn, about the cost of the system and how my system would be able to fund it. D2L was not very helpful when I inquired about the potential cost of their platform. I would also try to talk to more people face to face about the product they used. That way I could obtain more about the limitations of the platform. I found more information about how good the product is, and less about what it could not do. But I guess this is a good sign and a testament that the product is beneficial and can work for your school and system. I feel that the artifact was geared more towards school improvement. I say this because after this project, our system purchased an online learning platform called My Big Campus. While I know that this is not the same system that I recommended, the system realized the need for a platform to help engage students in the classroom. This also met a need for a 21st century learning environment that our system has committed themselves to. The platform that has been purchased is in use as we speak and has given me the ability to work with others about making it work in their classrooms.
