Standard 2.8
For this standard I feel that my data overview would suffice for this narrative. This presentation was created with information that I obtained from my school, and from the Alabama State Department of Education. The type of information included in this overview consists of Alabama High School Graduation exam data, free and reduced lunch data, enrollment data, and state rankings for Moody High School. The overview has a breakdown of rankings from each content area from the graduation exam as well as graphs and tables for the demographic information collected. All of the information and data collected was done so by myself with the help of my school counselors. The presentation was put together for the administration to point out Moody High School’s strengths and weaknesses. From these strengths and weaknesses, we as a team can configure development strategies to overcome our weaknesses.
In creating the presentation my best resource other than my counselor, was the Alabama State Department of Education’s website. Here, I was able to research Moody High School graduation exam test scores from previous years. From this research I was able to see Moody’s progress in Math and English over the past few years and see what attributed to these achievements as well as its pitfalls. While math showed progress, it still showed it had long way to go to catch up to the state average. This would be one of the examples of pitfalls at Moody. With the amount of information that was retrieved, I was able to put together a presentation to show my faculty and staff. After the presentation I was able to have my staff give input on strategies and possible interventions that are needed in our school. Some of the strategies suggested were interactive games, note-taking skills (Frayer model, doodle notes), and short writing assignments (gist statements). Once strategies have been implemented, this presentation will show evidence of the gains made at Moody High School. After the presentation and input from the staff I was also given the chance to show off some of my tech know how and share some applications that could help our staff and students achieve further gains. Some of the applications consisted of Khan Academy (for review purposes), creation of classroom websites, interactive poster boards, and webquest for project based learning. After this presentation we will be able to set benchmarks to see further growth in the future. Some of our gains in math were attributed to the use of Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) resources that we receive from the state department as well as continuous professional development at Moody High School. With the use of data in presentations like this one, our students and faculty at Moody High School continue to grow.
This artifact was really stressful because of the amount of information I researched. I was able to take a look at my school from a different perspective while creating this document. From this I was able to see a different side of my school that a regular classroom teacher might not ever get a chance to see. To me the demographics were the most interesting part of Moody High School, because we never really see behind the curtain. Sometimes as teachers we assume things about students and this can create problems. With the demographic data, all assumptions are gone and we can see who our students really are. This information was helpful to share with my staff, and this gave them a better understanding of the students we were dealing with. The one part I would do different is I would add strategies by the staff to the results page. This would be helpful in future presentations with other schools and possibly the system. From this presentation our teachers were able to see a different side of our student body and then see strategies of how to help them. This has worked well for us in our weekly professional development sessions. The Professional Development has provided the teachers at Moody High School the tools needed to achieve gains in the areas of math and literacy. Better informed teachers has resulted in higher achievement from our students. Pinpointing the needs of our students has given our staff an advantage in lesson planning thus meeting specific needs.
